Active Offer / Cynnig Rhagweithiol

At Rushcliffe, we recognise that it is our responsibility to offer services in Welsh so that our service users do not have to ask for them. We understand the importance of creating a bilingual living space, an environment where Welsh is treated no less favourably than the English language. We ensure that Welsh speaking individuals are treated with respect and dignity by asking them what their preferred language is, and by keeping this and their cultural needs in mind throughout their rehabilitation journey. Although it may be challenging to deliver entire care packages in Welsh due to a shortage of Welsh speaking professionals, we understand that the Active Offer can be delivered in a variety of ways. Rushcliffe sites in Wales make an Active Offer by using simple Welsh phrases with service users, ensuring the food menus, notice boards, and signs are bilingual, and by offering Welsh language reading material such as ‘Lingo Newydd’. In addition, Welsh speaking staff and all Welsh learners wear ‘Working Welsh’ or ‘Learning Welsh’ lanyards so that service users can easily identify those who can converse in Welsh. Non-Welsh speaking staff are also encouraged to learn Welsh because we recognise that even using basic Welsh phrases with Welsh speaking service users reduces feelings of isolation and helps to create a more comfortable and safe environment. Staff are also encouraged to start telephone conversations bilingually with service users’ families, outside organisations, and members of the public. To support staff with this, a table of Welsh greetings and phrases can be found near every office phone. Welsh language skills are also considered during recruitment with the aim of increasing the number of Welsh speaking professionals available so that more can be offered in Welsh. We understand that everyone has a responsibility to deliver the Active Offer and that language is at the core of good-quality care. With this in mind, we strive to improve in every way possible.
